FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about AnkiHeat.

Is AnkiHeat free?
Yes — all the core features: design customizations options, widget sizes, tap to review are free. Some pro features like custom color picker are available but are completely optional and does not detract from the core user experience in any way. They're just there for anyone who wants to show support :)
Are there ads on the app?
No. We hate ads as much as you do and will never add any.
Does my data leave my device?
No. All data stays on your device. AnkiHeat reads your local AnkiDroid database and renders the widget locally. No accounts, no servers, no telemetry.
Can I track multiple decks?
Yes. When configuring a widget you can choose any single deck or select "All Decks" to see your entire review history in one heatmap.
Why isn't my widget updating?
By default, widgets update every 15 minutes (Android limitation). If your widget seems stale, ensure that AnkiHeat has permission to access AnkiDroid. Android system may also delay widget updates to save battery.

Alternatively, you can long-press the widget on your homescreen to enter the Editor. There you'll find a troubleshooting menu to help resolve this issue.
Does AnkiHeat work with Anki Desktop?
No, AnkiHeat reads review data directly from AnkiDroid's local database. It does not sync with Anki Desktop or AnkiWeb — only AnkiDroid on your Android device. So only reviews on your Android count towards the heatmap.
How do I customize widget colors?
Open AnkiHeat, tap on the '+' button or an existing widget you want to edit, then tap the color swatches. Choose any background, heatmap accent, and any text color. Preview the result instantly before saving. Basically, just like the customizer above!
Why is there no data on my widget?
AnkiHeat can't read your past review history from AnkiDroid — it starts counting from the day you install it. Just keep studying as usual and your heatmap will fill in over time. There is a Anki import feature that will let you backfill your review history.

On AnkiDroid, go to 3-dot Menu → Export → Export format → Anki Collection Package (.colpkg) → Check 'Include media' → Export to create a backup file.

Then on AnkiHeat, go to Settings → Import Anki History → Upload the .colpkg file you just exported from AnkiDroid.

All data is processed locally.
iOS version??
Due to data sandboxing on Anki's iOS version of the app, it is not possible to access review data from Anki Mobile the same way on AnkiDroid. There is currently no plans to support iOS.
